Two women were arrested in Overland Park KS for prostitution on Wednesday. Both women advertised for massage services on Backpage. But, when officers replied to the ads, there were invited to apartments in Overland Park and were offered a lot more than just massage for cash. This is not the first time this year that people were busted in Overland Park for prostitution.

Who were arrested for prostitution?

Wan Chang (RHS) age 39, and Wei Wei Tiam (LHS) age 50 were arrested at their Overland Park apartments in separate locations for prostitution.

Overland Park Apartment Robbed

A robbery occurred at an apartment complex near the intersection of 124th street and Antioch in Overland Park KS yesterday night. A 16-year-old girl and her mother were at their Whispering Hills Apartments apartment home on the 8900 block of West 124th Street in South Overland Park, the Blue Valley District. The robbers had a taser and a handgun. The crime occurred when a man put her in a headlock and held a gun to the girl’s head. Police said one man threatened to shoot her if she didn’t take him to her apartment. She refused at first. They used the taser gun on the mother at least 3-4 times and got away with about $4500 in cash.

How did the robbery happen?

The girl walked out of her apartment to her car to get a pencil for her homework at about 9:45pm in the evening and a man grabbed her in a headlock and put a gun to her head. The girl said that she could feel the gun on her head. The man then forced the girl to her home where he met another man at the door. Her mom was sleeping on the couch and they charged in and shocked her with a stun gun repeatedly. The two men demanded money, got away with quite a lot of cash (about $4500) and fled the scene.

Where did the robbery occur?

The robbery took place at the parking lot of Whispering Hills Apartments complex. The car where the teen was attacked was parked on the Whispering Hills Apartments property.

Who robbed the teen and her mother at an Overland Park apartment home?

The two men were described as two black males, each about 5′7″ to 5′8″ tall and wearing all black. One man had a blue bandanna over his face and the other did not. The men were between the ages of 16 and 22 years old.

Yesterday, Police chased and arrested a man they say robbed The First National Bank of Kansas in Overland Park in the afternoon on September 1, 2009.

Which bank was robbed in Overland Park?

The First National Bank of Kansas located at 8800 W 135th St, Overland Park, KS‎ – (913) 266-9000‎. This is the First National Bank branch near Hy-Vee and McDonald’s.

What happened?

Just after 1 p.m., a man went through the drive-through lane and gave a teller a note asking for cash. The man said he was desperate and the note said there was a bomb in a school nearby and it demanded money. The clerk gave him the cash, police said. He drove away with the money but not for long.

Overland Park police and the Kansas Highway Patrol soon saw the man’s car and chased it for blocks until he ran into a curb and police arrested him, they said.

Rape in Overland Park

A woman said she was raped in a parking lot of a busy Overland Park shopping center last week. Overland Park Police said the 19-year-old woman was attacked on Thursday, August 20th, at about 7 p.m. in a parking lot near 119th Street and Metcalf Avenue. That’s where the big Super Walmart, Payless Shoes, the Guitar Center, as well as a few other stores. It is a busy shopping area as Walmart is usually busy around that time.

Overland Park Detective Matt Bregel said: “As soon as she got out of her car, she was approached by a white male who forced her back into the car,”. “(He) raped her. Took her cell phone and her keys and left on foot.”

The sexually assaulted victim said the man had no weapon and was a stranger. The woman was treated at an area hospital.

Suspect Rapist

Police are looking for a white man, 25 to 30 years old, with tan or olive skin. He has brown, wavy hair and brown eyes.
The victim thought he was about 6 feet tall. He could possibly be Italian. He wore a white tank shirt and blue sweat pants with white stripes on the sides. The police still has not arrested anyone. Anyone with information is urged to call Overland Park Police at (913) 895-6300.

Advice for other shoppers

Shoppers in the area should cautious about their surroundings. “I don’t get out of the vehicle without looking around,” said Marilyn Nickell. “I always have my keys in my hand. And I’ve taken a self-defense class and look everybody in the eye. And I always turn and look where I’m going.”

It is about time that there is a real museum in Overland Park KS. The City of Overland Park just approves a new museum development early this week. This is a huge project. It is centered around a museum which will showcase exhibits from the American Museum of Natural History, the Prairiefire Cultural Museum. The museum would feature a new exhibit every six months. The first five years’ worth of exhibits have already been scheduled.

The Overland Park City Approved the 60-acre Plan

The Overland Park City council approved the 60-acre plan on Monday.

When will this museum project start?

The developers hope to begin construction by the end of 2010 or early 2011.

How much will this project cost?

The project would require about $100 million in state and local tax incentives.

Where will this museum be built?

The City of Overland Park is hoping to turn the 135th Street area (135th and Nall) into a major tourist attraction. This area is bordering Leawood and is close to Kansas City MO so it would likely attract people from all over the KC Metro area.

Suspicious Package in Overland Park

Last Wednesday, August 12th, the Overland Park police exploded a suspicious package early morning near 64th Street and Santa Fe Drive, 6300 block on Riley. The box was detonated as a precaution by the bomb squad unit. Police were still trying to determine if there were explosives in the box.

How the police came across this suspicious package

The deputies were serving the warrant in the 6300 Block of Riley Street and while they searching the man’s trunk, they found something that appeared to be an explosive device. Overland Park police responded with its bomb squad.

The man police were looking for was taken into custody on unrelated charges. The man was wanted on outstanding warrants when they came across the package in the trunk of the man’s car.

Overland Park Man Making Anthrax Threat Against the IRS

An Overland Park Man admitted to making Anthrax threat to the IRS. In June, John Barker sent a letter to the IRS in Texas via US mail from a Shawnee Post Office. The envelope contained baby powder but the note in it claimed that the white powder was Anthrax. The treat to the IRS was not taken lightly as the FBI got involved and arrested Baker.

Who was the Overland Park man who made the Anthrax Threat?

John Philip Barker, 47, Overland Park, Kansas, pleaded guilty to sending a white powder through the U.S. mails that he claimed was anthrax, said U.S. Attorney Lanny Welch. In his plea, Barker admitted that on June 21, 2008, he used the U.S. mail to send a threatening communication to the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) in Austin, Texas.

What happened when the IRS received a letter with white powder?

The Internal Revenue Processing Center in Austin opened the letter which contained the following statement (with misspelling): “YOU HAVE BEEN EXPOSED TO ANTRAX DIE!” The Austin Fire Department HAZMAT team retrieved the letter and took it to the Laboratory Response Network lab for analysis. The lab found no evidence of bacillus anthracis.

How was the Overland Park man arrested?

Investigators retraced the letter’s path to an Automated Postal Center in Shawnee, Kansas, where Barker had used a credit card to purchase the postage. They arrested Barker, who said the envelope contained baby powder.

The Overland Park man faces a maximum penalty of 5 years in federal prison and a fine up to $250,000. Welch commended The Federal Bureau of Investigation and Assistant U.S. Attorney David Smith for their work on the case.

Overland Park Police said an Overland Park woman was assaulted while jogging on Friday, August 7th, morning at about 5:30am. The assault happened while the victim was jogging on 79th Street near Kessler. OP Police report the woman heard footsteps behind her. When a man came up to her, he reached over and fondled her. He grabbed her breasts and ran off.

That street where this happened is a quiet street with lots of joggers. Residents say that it is a quiet neighborhood with very few problems and incidents. Many people jog up and down that street all the time.

The only suspect description police had was very vague. The man is supposed to be 6 ft tall and he had a scarf over his face. He has dark hair. There is no one under custody for this crime. The attacker is still on the loose.

Public Meeting to Discuss Traffic Issues on 99th Terrace

There will be a public meeting in Overland Park on Tuesday, Aug. 11, to talk with residents who live along 99th Terrace, from Antioch west to Switzer, and others. Officials from the Public Works and Police departments will be on hand to provide historical traffic safety information and listen to comments. The meeting was requested by residents concerned about a fatality accident that occurred last month.

The accident

Sandra B. Carocari, 70, was struck by a white van while working in her front yard. A 19-year old female driver left the road and struck Carocari. Police accident investigators are still conducting an investigation into the accident, including awaiting the results of a toxicology report on the 19-year old driver. No charges have been filed at this time. The accident occurred in the 9800 block of West 99th Terrace.

The meeting is from 7 to 8 p.m.

The meeting will be held at the Knox Presbyterian Church, 9595 W. 95th St. Please enter through the doors near the southeast corner of the building.

Widening College Boulevard

College Boulevard in Overland Park will be widened from a four lane to a six lane divided thoroughfare between Pflumm Road and U.S. Highway 69 as part of the 2009 Capital Improvements Program. The design of this project is being completed by the Affinis Corporation. Relocation of utilities is underway. Construction has started and will last until September 2010.

Benefit of Widening College Blvd

Widening College will enhance safety, increase efficiency and allow for future traffic demands between Pflumm and U.S. 69.

This $10 million project also includes:

curbs and gutters,
sidewalks,
storm drainage improvements,
turning lanes,
a new traffic signal at King Street,
streetlighting and landscaping and irrigation of the medians.

Nieman Road also will be widened to accommodate new turn lanes.

On Saturday morning, a 71-year-old woman was killed in a freak hit and run accident in Overland Park KS while she was gardening outside of her home at 11:30am. Neighbors said they heard a loud crash when the accident happened.

A 19-year-old girl is in custody as she came back after fleeing the accident scene. Overland Park police say she lost control of her vehicle and struck and killed the old lady. A spokesman with the Overland Park Police Department says the girl returned about half an hour later to the accident scene and said that she was responsible for the hit and run while authorities were investigating.

Dangerous Neighborhoods in Overland Park

People living on the street where the accident happened said that they were not surprised as this particular street has been known for its traffic problem. They said that they have called the police many times about speeding problems. It is like a race track there as drivers tend to drive faster than the speed limit. The police said that they had made 60 trips to the area because of the traffic problem alone. Neighbors say that with the high speed of traffic on their street, it was only a matter of time before a tragedy struck.
